Elizabeth Line

The Elizabeth Line is London’s most recently constructed underground line. Constructed over a 10 year period and opened in 2022 The Elizabeth line spans 73 miles across London and the South East, connecting Essex through central London to Berkshire. The programme delivered ten new stations alongside major upgrades to existing ones, transforming connectivity across the capital.

A central objective of the project was to significantly improve accessibility across the network. As a result, all forty-one Elizabeth Line stations were designed to provide step-free access from street level to platform, setting a new benchmark for inclusive transport design.

Dewhurst was selected to support this landmark project, supplying lift signalisation equipment across the Elizabeth Line estate, including stations, platforms and associated developments.

Delivering lift signalisation for a project of this scale presented a number of specific challenges:

Consistency across a vast network

  • With forty-one stations spanning underground and overground environments, it was essential to maintain a clear, recognisable, and consistent user experience across all lift installations.

 Accessibility compliance at scale

  • All lift components needed to fully comply with EN81-70 accessibility standards, ensuring ease of use for passengers with visual impairments, reduced mobility, or other accessibility requirements.

High passenger volumes and long-term durability

  • The Elizabeth Line serves thousands of passengers every day. Signalisation equipment needed to be robust, reliable, and easy to maintain in demanding, high-traffic public environments.

Integration with existing London Underground design language

  • New installations needed to align seamlessly with the established London Underground aesthetic, ensuring continuity across the wider transport network.

Solutions

Working closely with project stakeholders, Dewhurst supplied a proven range of lift signalisation solutions designed to meet both technical and user-focused requirements.

The US96-EN Jumbo pushbutton was selected as the primary pushbutton across Elizabeth Line stations. This classic square design has been widely used across the London Underground for many years, providing a familiar and consistent interface for passengers. Fully compliant with EN81-70, the US96-EN Jumbo features a high tactile legend with standard English braille, alongside an extra-large black pressel that offers strong visual contrast within large station environments.

For selected overground stations, US85-EN Jumbo pushbuttons were supplied. These offer the same accessibility features as the US96-EN, with the addition of a wide red surround to further enhance visibility in open, naturally lit spaces.

To clearly communicate lift position and status, Dewhurst supplied the UT range of scrolling lift position indicators. Already iconic within the London Underground, these indicators feature high-definition displays and large font sizes, ensuring information is easily readable from a distance.

Beyond the stations themselves, Dewhurst also supported Crossrail Place, a newly built mixed-use development located above Canary Wharf Elizabeth Line station. Here, we supplied jumbo pushbuttons, multimedia screens, and indicator lanterns for lifts and landings throughout the complex, which includes retail, leisure spaces, and a roof garden across five upper levels.

Across the project, our solutions combined durability, accessibility, and visual consistency — helping to deliver a reliable, inclusive lift experience that supports the long-term success of the Elizabeth Line.
