Wellcome Foundation

Wellcome Collection is a free public venue in Euston, London, exploring the connections between medicine, life, and art through exhibitions, events, and gallery spaces. As part of a major redevelopment programme, the Wellcome Trust undertook a comprehensive modernisation of the building to enhance visitor experience and improve circulation throughout the venue.

A key element of this redevelopment focused on upgrading the public lifts, ensuring they supported the venue’s ambition to encourage visitors to explore beyond the ground floor and engage more fully with upper-level galleries and exhibition spaces.

Dewhurst played a central role in delivering upgraded lift media and indicator solutions as part of this transformation.

As visitor numbers increased, the Wellcome Trust identified vertical circulation as a critical barrier to engagement within the building. While the ground floor attracted strong footfall, many visitors were reluctant to travel to upper floors where additional galleries and exhibitions are located.

The specific challenges included:

Encouraging visitor movement through the building

  • Lifts needed to do more than simply transport passengers; they had to actively support wayfinding and encourage exploration.

Replacing basic, static information

  • Existing lift displays were limited to basic indicators and static signage, offering little opportunity to communicate dynamically with visitors.

Aligning technology with a cultural environment

  • Any new solution had to integrate seamlessly with the building’s public-facing, design-led environment, without feeling intrusive or overly technical.

Delivering a fully integrated, reliable system

  • Media displays, landing indicators, and network infrastructure all needed to work cohesively, supported by robust commissioning and long-term reliability.

Solutions

Dewhurst supplied a comprehensive suite of LCD display solutions for the refurbished public lifts, including four 19-inch Panorama media displays for the car operating panels, alongside 36 Picture displays for the landing indicator panels throughout the venue.

Dewhurs played a prominent and proactive role in the project, working closely with the Wellcome Trust and project partners to ensure the technology delivered meaningful improvements to the visitor experience.

In addition to specifying the Panorama media displays, Dewhurst developed both the layout and content strategy for the screens, transforming them from simple indicators into effective communication tools. The displays now support wayfinding, reinforce exhibition messaging, and provide visitors with clear prompts to explore upper levels of the building.

Dewhurst’s technical team also carried out full network commissioning, ensuring seamless integration between car displays, landing indicators, and the wider system infrastructure. This collaborative, end-to-end approach helped deliver a solution that was both technically robust and aligned with the Wellcome Trust’s wider development objectives.

By upgrading lift signalisation from static information to dynamic media, the project successfully improved vertical circulation and enhanced visitor engagement — demonstrating how thoughtfully applied lift technology can play a vital role in shaping public space behaviour.
